A New Water Hazard?

Thanks to Dave Cannon for the picture above taken on a recent dog walk. Just in case you can't recognise it, it is down by the 11th tee. The last time it was as bad as this was in the winter of 2019/20 just before Covid. I had a similar picture back then of Simon Wooderson, knee deep in the same "lake" Matt tells me we have had over 200mm of rain in January - this is double the expected average.

Sadly this has meant another week of no golf at the Club, but if there is any encouraging news, it definitely feels like the fairways are getting the water moving through them better than they used to. This is because of the regular sanding we have been doing. We have had a visit today from the drainage consultant we used a few years back when we first started this process. He was really surprised at how well the fairway surfaces were holding up compared to 5 years ago when he was last here.

He has carried out samples and tests on all the fairways, so when the results come back we will know for certain how beneficial this work continues to be. We will keep you posted.

Course Remains Closed

I'm afraid that there will be no golf again this weekend. 5 hours heavy rain in the early hours of this morning have pushed us back over the edge, and there is more to come this evening. The clubhouse, bar and catering will open from 10am to 3pm, please come and have a brunch or lunch to keep the team busy!

Captains’ Charities 2025

Robin and Carol would like to thank all those who contributed so generously to their chosen charities over the last year.

Between you around £10,600 was donated and split between KSS Air Ambulance and St Peter and St James Hospice.

Robin recently visited KSS Air Ambulance at Redhill aerodrome for a fascinating informative visit where he handed over the cheque from Piltdown Golf Club. Thank-you also to all those who contributed to the KSS collection boxes in the clubhouse, which produced an extra £190.

All very much appreciated.

Thank-you.

Robin and Carol

The Rain in Spain falls mainly in Portugal!

It's not only Piltdown, or even England that is suffering from the recent downpours. Those of us stupid enough to venture to Portugal last week got pretty wet for the 3rd year in a row. (It looks even worse this week!)

Some good golf was played, but the star performer was Ben Todd, who played some brilliant golf and helped his team led by Jason Partidge, and featuring Rob Zilstra and Alan Coulthard into 4th place overall, and top of the Piltdown rankings.

Despite the rain we had a great week, and all enjoyed each others company. We look quite happy in the top picture - that's because we didn't play golf that day....... the bottom picture will show you why not!

Highlight of the week was probably a Padel Match between Turzynski & Bonsall V Goddard & White......lucky for them we didn't keep score. Experience clearly more important than youth!

Tuesday Boys

Who invented “Dry January”?

Sadly no play this Tuesday after heavy rain.

But nice to see a decent number of TBs for lunch on Tuesday, including an injured Martin Rogers who was wiped out by another skier in France. He has had to have a plate inserted in his knee and will be off games for quite a while.

Martin - stick to nice safe games, like golf, and join us in praying for drier weather.

Kitchen Works about to Begin

Many of you will be aware that we are about to begin the major project of stripping out the kitchen, and fitting a new, modern, fit for purpose replacement. Legislation is changing all the time, and the EHO advised us a year ago that we needed to act fairly swiftly if we wanted to keep our 5 star rating. Lizzie and her team have done an amazing job with some very old equipment, and difficult to clean surfaces and cabinets. They are looking forward to a shiny new kitchen. We are also upgrading the equipment from LPG cookers to electric, which will make us more energy efficient in the future.

This has been another huge piece of work from Paul Fairbairn, and we are extremely grateful for his efforts.

This work will keep the main kitchen closed until the end of March, so we cannot run any major events or functions. We will however be offering a simple bar snack menu using the kitchen in the Triangle building, and bringing it across to the main clubhouse. This will consist of sandwiches, toasties, wraps, soup, etc

Please click here to see the reduced menu.

The hours of operation will be 10.00am - 3pm Monday to Friday and 8.00am - 3pm at the weekends. Order at the bar as usual, and the food will be delivered to your table.

Congratulations Alex

Thanks to all of you who took part in the Social Survey - results published yesterday. As promised - we have done a draw of all those who entered their email addresses into the survey, and the lucky winner is Alex Orgill who wins £75 towards a Sunday lunch or any other Social event of her choice. Alex, please get in touch and let me know when you would like to come (after the kitchen works of course!)
