Piltdown is situated in a very picturesque part of East Sussex, and is surrounded by many local attractions and things to do when not on the golf course.
We are located just outside the Ashdown Forest. The Forest is an area of outstanding natural beauty, and was the inspiration to AA Milne when writing the Winnie the Pooh stories. To find out more about walks and activities available at Ashdown Forest please click here.
Another beautiful place to visit whilst in the Piltdown area is Sheffield Park and Gardens. This is a stunning National Trust Property and gardens. The garden was originally designed by Capability Brown, and a lot of his influence is still evident today. Open all year round, you really should try and find time to take a stroll around this beautiful garden. Please click here to find out more.
The local town of Lewes (10 minutes by car) has some great independent shops, tea rooms and places to eat. It is also the home of Harvey’s Brewery. Here you can go on a tour of the brewery which finishes with some “compulsory” testing of the products! They say “Unlike many tours of commercial premises, our brewery tour is not simply a walk around with a guide; it is a chance for us to meet our customers and give an insight to the heritage of brewing at Harvey’s. The informal sampling session that follows is a catalyst for one to one questions and answers. We also gain a great insight from the experience and it is always a pleasure to entertain our customers in this manner.” To find out more, please click here.
If you like your wine, then there are a couple of vineyards in Sussex, including the award winning Ridgeview in Ditchling. Their sparkling wine has many awards, and you can go on a tour of the vineyard to find out all about it. You will be hosted by an expert and will experience insights into the craft of creating their award-winning sparkling wines. This followed by a tasting in the beautiful tasting room overlooking the South Downs. For more details, please click here.
If you are here on tour and looking for somewhere to stay there are options to suit all budgets from 5 star luxury at Horsted Place or The Ashdown Park Hotel to rooms at local Gastropubs such as the Bull on the Green in Newick and the famous Griffin Inn in Fletching.
Is there any better golf experience than a Summer’s day spent on a fast running heathland course, surrounded by the contrasting purple of the native heather and beautiful green fairways? We don’t think so which is why we’ve joined forces with our local neighbours of Royal Ashdown Forest Golf Club and Crowborough Beacon Golf Club to form the Sussex Heathland Golf Tour.
Surrey is famous for its Heathland golf, but in Sussex they are few and far between. In fact we are very fortunate to find three courses (four if you include the West Course at Ashdown) of such great quality so close together. All three of our Clubs have featured in various Top 100 lists over recent years, and you won’t be disappointed with any of them.
In 2017 representatives from the three clubs sat down with Golf Tourism England, and also a local Golf Travel Specialist, Golf Escapes. Between us we put together the Sussex Heathland Golf Experience.
Now you can arrange a tour to East Sussex for 3 or 4 days and play some magnificent Heathland golf. We are only half an hour from Gatwick Airport, and whilst in the area there are plenty of other things for the touring golfer to do such as a visit to the Harveys Brewery or the Ridgeview Vineyard. We are less than half an hour from the Buzz of Brighton, and only 10 minutes from the historic town of Lewes. The area really does have something for everyone.
