The Long Weekend

As you read this, I hope I am enjoying some sunshine in Spain. Kim & I grabbed a last minute weekend break to Las Colinas which is her favourite place to play golf. Today (Friday) is our first round - so no doubt I will be 1 - 0 down by now!

Thanks to those of you who booked into some of the social events following last week's email, it's great to get some support for some of these things. With that in mind, the Social Team will be sending out a survey in the next week or so, and we would really appreciate members taking 5 minutes to fill it in. There will be an option to stay anonymous or to include your name, and for those of you who do, there is a chance to win Sunday lunch for two in a prize draw.

Tomorrow we have the annual Under 60s V Over 60s - will youth triumph over experience? Derek Elphick leads the youngsters, and Simon Lapthorn the oldies. Good luck to all participants.

Phil - over to Céline

Email issues

IG tells us that they're having problems delivering emails to Hotmail, Outlook and Live users. We know this has affected some of our members, and obviously those people won't receive this newsletter and will be kept in the dark, so if a fellow member tells you they haven't been receiving course updates etc., please tell them that this should hopefully be fixed soon.

Mars bar cookie pie

It's a slow news week, so I can't resist mentioning my latest obsession, currently sitting on the bar. In Phil's absence, it has fallen to me to quality-control Amelia and Lizzy's latest masterpiece, which combines homemade nut-free chocolate spread, soft cookie dough and chunks of Mars Bar, all baked into gooey perfection.  Try it, you won't regret it. I reckon it's better than a hole in one.

Ongoing maintenance

James and his team are carrying on with the painstaking work of refurbishing the downstairs windows. As the weekend is planned to be dry, they will still be scraping, fixing and painting outdoor and indoors tomorrow and Sunday.

As ever, thanks for your patience!

Booking into other people's tee time

As we've had a few issues with people booking themselves into others' tee times without giving them prior notice or checking that it wasn't a problem, we've removed that option.

If a golfer wants to book into someone else's tee time, the only way to do it is now to ask that person to add them to their booking.

Spurk mats available in the pro shop

Jason is now stocking Spurk mats - £35 for the mat and the accompanying bag, easy to clip to your golf bag.

They are steadier than the ones we have put at your disposal, as they have six spikes that dig into the ground and hold the mat in place when you hit your ball.

Don't forget that mats are compulsory during handicap qualifying competitions and when putting in a general play score. This ensures that conditions are consistent and fair for all players.

Course update

This week was started off with finishing the top dressing of the fairways. This all went to plan and the rain wasn’t as bad as first thought, so this enabled us to finish on time with minimal wear to the course. We had 25mm of rain in the end, which was a lot better than first expected. We will continue to use the drag mat to try and work in the sand and get them back to looking like a fairway and not a beach. I am also very pleased with the germination we have been getting from the earlier overseeding that was carried out on most of the fairways.

We continued with prepping the heather mounds ready for turfing at the start of the week. The team have trialled using a mixture of sand and an ericaceous compost to promote the best possible conditions for the heather turf to survive. With that now achieved, they have started to lay the heater on those mounds. We have also had the digger out on the 6th removing the weeds and saplings. Our grillo has returned today and is currently being used to top the heather on the 4th.

We have had another week of constant leaf blowing, but until the trees have shed all their leaves, this will continue.

On a final note, please remember to repair your pitchmarks and maybe a couple of others if you’re feeling generous, as some greens have a lot of damage from them with them being that bit softer. We are trying to keep buggies on for as long as possible and to help us continue this it will be greatly appreciated if you can be very careful on where you are driving. I understand that this can cause some wear on areas, especially at the end of pathways, so we will rope off these sections accordingly.

Thank you
