Ladies' Captain's October newsletter

My first newsletter as Ladies’ Captain. I am so excited about the year ahead and there is lots to tell you about. However, firstly, thanks and appreciation must go to Carol from the whole ladies’ section for putting everything into her year as Captain. I have a very hard act to follow. And secondly, I would like to introduce my team, Patricia O’Shea, Vice Captain, established Committee members, Meg James and Mary Powderham, and new to the podium, Anne Watson and Becs Dawson.

Creating a well-balanced diary that caters and includes everyone isn’t straightforward with all the permutations of red tees and blue tees, 18-hole as well as 9-hole competitions. Not to mention, Stablefords, Medals, Nationwide and Fun competitions plus our well-established Cup competitions. However, Céline and I have given it our best shot and we hope you like what we have arranged for you.

Date for your Diary: 4 – 5 August 2026

Sandford Springs Hotel & Golf Club

The golf courses are set among the beautiful rolling hills of Watership Down in Hampshire, and have spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. Situated on the A339 in Hampshire between Newbury and Basingstoke, Sandford Springs Golf Club is approximately a two-hour drive from Piltdown.

Sandford Springs has a unique 27 holes layout, comprising three testing nine hole courses, The Park, The Woods and The Lakes. The combinations ensure a varied challenge in a beautiful setting. The club has a driving range, well-stocked Pro-Shop and a friendly, and welcoming clubhouse, complete with a fantastic food menu, and a comfortable hotel.

A twin standard room with 2 rounds of golf, dinner and bed and breakfast is priced at £189 pp. This event is open to all, but spaces are limited, so to avoid disappointment, please email me to reserve your spot on the trip.

Ladies' 9 Hole Winter League

Céline has put this together to keep us motivated during the late autumn and winter months. You can put in as many 9-Hole cards as you like at the weekends and your best five scores will count towards the prizes at the end of the season. It’s just £10 to enter and all the entry fees will go towards the prizes. Why not go out with a friend or take an Academy member out for 9 holes? And remember, you can still play 18 holes, but it’s only the Front 9 that count.

I’m in! Have you signed up yet? Email Céline if you'd like to play.

Unsung Hero

Over my three years on the Committee and as your Vice Captain, I have noticed that many of you will go that extra mile to help. It ranges from supporting the teams, making snacks, manning the refreshment tents, taking photographs, helping with the Academy ladies and more. I would like to recognise your efforts at the end of the year with the Unsung Hero award.

Budding Photographers

Our fabulous photographer, Patricia, is stepping back from her photographic responsibilities as she has a busy year ahead.

I’m delighted that Annette Shelford has volunteered to step in. But I would like another two photographers to share the camera duties, so that all events can be covered. Are there any Lee Millers out there?

Christmas Lunch – 11 December

It’s never too early to think of Christmas and Céline posted the sign-up sheet on Monday. As always, we like to make it lots of fun and this year we are doing a Baby Quiz. Can you send a picture of when you were a baby, toddler or young girl to Céline? At our Christmas Lunch, we can then guess, Who’s Who?

Recent Events

Ladies’ Grannies’ Clock – 9 October

The winner of the Grannies’ Clock was Caroline Bradley (36 points), narrowly edging out Lucy Jackson (35 points). However, Swati Patel was on the top of the board with a very impressive 39 points.

The Drive In and Millennium Trophy Mixed Foursomes

The weather was just perfect for this annual event which marks the start of the year for the respective captains. I’m delighted that the Junior Captain is brilliant golfer Evie Lewis and I can only see her handicap going down during the year. Tsol Keoshgerian is the Men’s Captain, so lots of fun should be had by all. Preceding this was the Millennium Trophy Mixed Foursomes, this year won by Sue Adams and Mark Wallwork, (39 points) beating Rosemary Burns and Simon Dougall on countback.

Ladies' Invitation to Tuesday Boys – 16 October

Who could have arranged it better? 30 Gentlemen and 30 Ladies to make 15 groups. Perfection!

And the winners, and very popular too, Judith Eggers with President, Ken Bulteel (42 points). Second place with 39 points were Trevor Burgess and Rhoda Pearman, narrowly edging out Bob Hall and Carolyn Oldham with 37 points.

It was the last time that Nigel Hawes from the Tuesday Boys was helping to run the event and so was presented with a gift of his favourite tipple as a mark of thanks.
