Can't see the Strong for the Trees.....

In the final event of the Race to Piltdown last Saturday we had 5 players tied at the top on 36 points. Coming out as the winner on the back 9 was Chris Strong.

His 36 points was despite him hitting his ball half way up a tree on the left of the 4th!

Thanks James Warwick for the photo.

Race to Piltdown

It all came down to the final event - 3 possible winners - Ryan Wills, Derek Elphick & Steve Walker. Playing together in the final group, Ryan went out like a train and stamped his authority on the event. He made gross birdies at 1, 2, 4 & 5 to take a commanding lead. It was over before it had even begun.

Despite a stumble over the back 9, Ryan was one of the 5 who tied with 36 points, and he ended up the comfortable winner of the Race To Piltdown.

Despite a good last day from Luke Crampton, Derek Elphick won the Scratch Order of Merit - average of best 6 scores was 71.67

Ladies' gruesomes

The Ladies’ Section turned out in full fancy dress for their Halloween Gruesomes competition. From pumpkin and witches to a rather convincing skeleton, the effort put into the costumes was outstanding, though how some of them managed a full swing under those hats remains a mystery!

Some excellent scoring proved that a little hocus-pocus goes a long way. A huge well done to all who took part and helped make it such a fun occasion. Same time next year, ladies… if you dare!

Disappointing Damage

This picture was taken of the 15th Blue Tee on Monday morning this week. It suggests that all these divots were taken out on the Sunday. This does not look like general wear to me - it looks like one or two people, probably quite decent players, have been practicing short irons into the 15th green.

This is completely unacceptable. We have our suspicions as to who this might be, and if we ever find out there will be repercussions.

This is your course - please care for it and leave it how you would like to find it.

Whilst on the subject - Pitchmarks....... please try and repair yours, plus one or two others on each green.

Winter opening hours and shoe policy

Please note that now that the clocks have changed, the clubhouse will close at 5pm every day unless there's an event on. It will still open at 8am every day.

We’ll also be returning to our policy of no golf shoes in the bar. Allowing them over the summer months worked well, but with the wetter conditions returning, we need to protect the carpet and interior once again. Please make sure you bring a change of shoes with you (ESPECIALLY JUNIORS!).

Clubhouse maintenance

Now that the guttering has been replaced, it's the turn of the bar and dining-room windows to receive a bit of love and care. Disruption should be minimal, but James and his team will be working indoors at some points, so apologies if you're asked to move or if a window happens to be open when you're having lunch or a drink. It will all be worth it when our venerable windows look all shiny and (almost) new.

Course update

Unfortunately my statement about the weather this week looking better was very much incorrect. (Never trust the weatherman)! We had 35mm of rain this week, and the forecast doesn’t look pretty, but let’s hope that changes!

When we saw the rain that we had coming in, it did make us nervous for the top dressing we had booked in on the fairways. Luckily, the course held out and we are well under way with this. We managed to complete the outer 9 in 2 days, which meant that we were able to open more holes on Friday. Our previous efforts on the fairways have definitely helped, as I’m not sure we would have been able to get on them with this amount of rain historically. We will continue on the inner 9 next week. Thank you for your patience while we carry out this important work.

You may have noticed our new friend the robot mower out on the driving range! The range is always one of the wettest parts of the whole estate, so having the robot mower couldn’t have come at a better time as we wouldn’t be able to get our machinery on some of the wettest sections at the moment.

We have some heather turf turning up next week, so this week has mainly been about prepping the heather mounds on 10, 14 and 18, ready for turfing.

Thanks
Chris Ahier
