Piltdown Golf Club

23rd September 2025 Newsletter

My last newsletter!

It’s hard to believe that we are nearly at the end of September and the main summer golf events are over, but not quite! Big congratulations to Trishia, Valerie and Brenda C won the SCLGA Autumn 9 Challenge at Rustington yesterday! They also won the Spring version of the Autumn version of the event, so well done on the double!

I'm also pleased to let you know that we have a new member fresh out of the Academy. She's called Sally Gomer and already a good golfer. Alex Orgill, who has also gone through the Academy, is also in the process of joining. Rosemary Charles and Sarah Pearce are becoming Academy Plus members, which means that they are entitled to play in all Ladies' competitions except for match play events. Please look out for them and give them a warm welcome!

August/September events

The Ladies' Open

It was a very successful day and we had several lovely messages from ladies saying how much they enjoyed the day at Piltdown. Thank you to all who helped with ball spotting and in the tents.

Ladies' Grannies Clock

I have been very fortunate with the weather over the Spring and Summer, but sadly the weather gods decided it was time to rain and the Grannies' clock comp was postponed to October 9th.

Autumn Meeting

It wasn’t the nicest of days for The Autumn Meeting Medal and Blue tee Stableford, with some heavy showers! Unfortunately the Greensomes the day after had to be abandoned as the course became unplayable. As always everyone stayed cheerful and we enjoyed another excellent Lizzie lunch. Thank you to Sheila Horscroft and Mary Powerham for organising the event. Thanks too to Emily who cleaned all the trophies so beautifully. Lastly a huge thanks to Céline who had her work cut out sorting out the prize money after the Greensomes were abandoned.

Academy Scramble

On Sunday 7th 7 full members were delighted to take out 21 Academy members for a friendly 8 hole scramble. Everyone had a great time, and we were all really impressed with the skills on display! We've organised another one on Sunday 2 November and already 11 Academy members have signed up, so feel free to join in!

Captains' Charity Day

Another wet start and the course was on the verge of being unplayable. Fortunately the sun came out and with the help of a brisk wind the greens and puddles cleared and there were some good scores. Thank you to Ryan Willis who raised £600 by standing on the 18th tee all morning challenging people to get closer to the pin than him. Thank you to all those we made or bought nibbles for the refreshment tents. We made £5,800 on the day to be shared between my charity and Robin's.

Finally…..

Well this is my last newsletter as your lady Captain. I have really enjoyed the year, thank you for all your help and support. Piltdown ladies are very special.

It’s been a very very busy summer, I am beginning to wonder what I am going to do with myself apart from just playing golf!

Looking outside this morning, Autumn has definitely arrived and it’s time to hand over to Annie in a couple of weeks' time. I would like to wish Annie all the best for the coming year as your Lady Captain. I know she will be brilliant.

Carol x
