The Events Keep on Coming

As we draw to the end of August and into September it's great to see that we are still really busy, with lots of competitions, matches and events. Sometimes it's hard to draw breath, and this week has been no exception.

The Ladies had the 36 holes Enid Adair, the CRAFT Club had a big Charity Event this morning, and over the weekend there is the 36 hole Men's Murrant Trophy, as well as the 36 Hole Junior Championship.

Well done to those who have played well so far, and good luck to all of you playing over the weekend.

Piltdown teams continue to perform well this year, as you will see in the piece below. Good luck to Derek Elphick's Pyecombe Pitcher team who face East Sussex National at Piltdown next Saturday 30th August in the final group game. We need a positive result to progress to the semi-finals. Derek has asked that anyone who happens to be free and would like to come along and support, please do so. It makes a difference. Tee off from 11am, matches will draw to a close around 3 - 4pm.

Quadrangular Trophy

On Monday our Men's Captain Robin led his team to victory in the Quadrangular Trophy. This is what he had to say:

"A warm welcome from Club Captain Ian Allan who made us all feel at home.

Our morning team, playing against the home side Seaford, was skippered by Steve Loney, paired with Chris Manwaring. The two other pairings were Mark Horscroft and Mike Haynes, Rob Zijlstra and Grant Horscroft.
A two one victory put us through to the final against Haywards Heath.

In the afternoon the club Captain Robin Cox stepped in to pair up with Steve Loney. Rob Zijlstra the only other team member to play 36 holes was paired up with David Shepherd. The third pairing in the afternoon was Simon Lapthorn and Jan Nawrocki.
With a repeat of the morning scoring the team managed to win by two games to one.

A grand victory which Piltdown last won in 2007, and previously in 1977!
Next year the tournament, where we are drawn in the opening round against Crowborough, will be held at Haywards Heath, who I am sure will be seeking revenge on their home soil.

Robin"

Conquering Captain Carol!

It's been a great win for both our Captains! Well done Carol for winning the Enid Adair 36 hole medal. A gruelling test at the moment, with the heather as thick as it is.

George wins the Sussex Professional Championship!

Congratulations to George Goddard who shot rounds of 69 and 65 at his boyhood club of West Hove to lift the Bill Watts Trophy and be crowned as Sussex Professionals Champion.

His good run of form continued as yesterday, he came second in the South region Assistant and Trainee Championship at Clandon Regis Golf Club with a fantastic score of 5 under par.

Well done George - Piltdown is very proud of you.

Ladies v Triangle

Christine Gibbons and Bob Cummings won this year’s competition with a fantastic score of 48 in the American foursomes format (it was so popular that we'll see it again soon!) and were presented with their trophies by Steve Marner from the Triangle and Carol Hartley. This was, of course, the last time this competition will be held and the Triangle team each presented their lady partner with a bunch of flowers. A very touching gesture!

Hole in One for Magic Madeleine

Congratulations to 14-year-old Madeleine Cockburn who had her first ever hole in one on Sunday at the 7th.

What a great achievement!

Junior Open

There was some amazing golf played at the Junior Open last Friday. In the girls' section, despite making a 7 at the second, Darci Lewis-Bradbury from West Hove shot a level par gross 72 to win the girls' scratch event, with Amelia Roberts from Worthing winning the nett with a 69.

For the boys, it was a Wills 1 and 2 in the scratch - Jack shot 70, and Ryan 71 to make sure Piltdown were well represented at the prize giving. The best nett was a remarkable 71 nett 61 by Jonathan Toplis from Crowborough.

Huge thanks to all the members who volunteered with their time to ball spot or to make sure the kids all get a drink and a snack halfway round. It was a really hot day, and your efforts were much appreciated.
