Good Recovery

The course has recovered well from the course maintenance last week. Lots of sand has been brushed into the greens, tees and approaches. The greens are almost back to their usual condition, and the tees & approaches will be about a week behind.

There will be lots of mowing going on next week as we try to get the definition back in place, and get the course back to looking its best. Picture above taken yesterday showing the lovely purple and green of Piltdown in the late summer.

This weekend we are experimenting with a roll-up White Tee Medal. You can play on EITHER Saturday or Sunday, but you can only enter once. All you need to do to enter is go in the shop, pay your fiver entry, and then go and register on the touchscreen in the entrance hall. After play, just pop your score in the machine as normal. We will figure out and combine the results on Monday.

Next Saturday we have an All Day Men's Stableford, and an All Day Ladies' Stableford - same rules apply - just book a tee time, turn up, and enter the comp.

GROUND UNDER REPAIR CHANGES TO THE 4TH

From tomorrow (Saturday) we are removing the blanket GUR from the lay up area on the 4th. From now on that area is back in play (apart from the new tee area which is still roped off) If your ball lands in one of the new drainage channels you can take a free drop, otherwise you must now play your ball as it lies.

Gordon Hawes

25 members of the Club gathered for lunch on Tuesday to celebrate the fact that Gordon Hawes has been a member for very nearly 80 years!

Gordon joined as a 13-year-old back in 1946. He has seen so many changes over the years, it was a delight for us all to hear him share some of his memories.

Gordon is also a member of the R&A - but that is a relatively new thing for him - only about 60 years!

Here he is pictured with Club President, Ken Bulteel who presented him with an honorary lifetime membership to mark the occasion.

Piers Heagerty (5th from the left) is probably the only person with any chance of catching him. He has just passed 50 years at Piltdown a month or two back.

Martlets team in the final!

A fantastic achievement for our Martlets team! After getting the better of Lindfield, Sweetwoods, Hill Barn and Horsham in the group stage and beating Royal Eastbourne in the quarter-finals, they triumphed over Royal Ashdown Forest to book their place in the final against Cowdray Park. It will take place on 13 August at Crowborough - quite handy for us so we're hoping we'll have lots of supporters attending. Best of luck!

Pyecombe Pitcher - Cowdray Park vs Piltdown

Date: 2nd August 2025
Venue: Cowdray Park
Result: Piltdown 4 Cowdray Park 1

The Piltdown team represented by Ethan Randall, Charlie Wallbank, Luke Crampton, Peter Barrett, Derek Elphick, Neil Sinclair, Matt Parker, Paul Beveridge, Ian Cooper and Chris Martin produced a great away performance to defeat Cowdry Park 4–1 in, handing the hosts their first home loss of the season in emphatic style.

Coming into the match, Cowdry boasted a formidable home record, having brushed aside their last two opponents with 5–0 victories. However on a sun-drenched afternoon Piltdown showed a real fighting spirit to record an exceptional result.

This result propels Piltdown into the top spot in their league setting up a potentially decisive final match against East Sussex National on 30th August, with the winners guaranteed a spot in the semi-finals.

Course update

We’re pleased to report that all hollow coring on the course has now been completed. This week, the remaining tees have being verti-cut, cored, and dressed. It’s likely that we’ll need to apply additional sand to the tees and approaches in the coming days to ensure all holes are fully filled and surfaces remain in good condition.

Work on the putting green and chipping green was also completed on Monday.

As is often the case during periods of essential maintenance, general course presentation has had to take a temporary back seat. This is largely due to the number of staff required to carry out the intensive work involved. That said, we have ensured everything has received at least one cut, and from next week our focus will return fully to presentation and playability.

Thank you for your patience and understanding while this vital work has been carried out.

We were also pleased to welcome Will Best to the greenkeeping team this week. Will joins us from Lingfield Golf Club and brings with him over ten years of valuable experience in the industry. He has expressed his enthusiasm about joining Piltdown, having only ever heard positive things about the Club. If you see him out on the course, please do take a moment to say hello.

Thanks
Chris Ahier
Deputy course manager
