A Busy Period

It's a busy period here at Piltdown, with the Sussex Vets Championship over 2 days as well as the Mixed Open tomorrow. The summer is flying along, I can't believe it's August next week.

Hopefully you have managed to get out and play a few holes. I played twice this week, which is very unlike me, and I have to say I was delighted with the conditions out there. Having visited a few other courses in recent weeks, I felt that we were well ahead of them all - especially on greens, tees and approaches.

It's always tricky trying to balance members' need for tee times with competitions and events at this time of year, so I hope if you have tried to play, you have managed to be able to do so. We monitor this carefully, and looking at today's sheet, it is one of our busiest days ever. Apologies if you couldn't get the time you wanted, but rest assured we keep as many times free as we can.

A good example of this was yesterday when there were nearly 100 players applied to play in the Sussex Vets, but we asked the organisers to limit it to 69 players to enable us to get the tee back open as early as possible. Thanks as ever for your patience and understanding; it’s a juggling act, but one we take seriously to keep things fair and enjoyable for all.

Sussex Veterans' Championship

We were delighted to once again welcome Veteran players from across the County. It’s always heartening to hear positive feedback, and the chorus of compliments about our course and hospitality has been wonderful.

Doug Cameron of Worthing lifted the individual trophy with a gross 69 and even went so far as to declare our greens the best he’s played all season: praise indeed! I'm not sure exactly how old Doug is, but I know that in shooting 69 he has beaten his age.

What an amazing achievement.

Then today, our very own Ken Bulteel and Martin Tugwell won the Sussex Veterans' Foursomes for the third time! Well done both, and congratulations Ken for an uncharacteristically concise winner's speech!

Next year, we'll be taking a break from hosting this Championship to instead host the Sussex County Championship. It speaks volumes about the respect we command that, year after year, we are asked to host such prestigious events.

Congratulations Ryan

What a week it's been for Junior Captain Ryan Wills.

Representing Piltdown at Crowborough last Saturday, he shot a level par 71 with 4 bogeys balanced out by 4 birdies.

2 days later at Piltdown, he shot level par again in the Junior Stableford - this time 3 bogeys, 3 birdies and 12 pars.

Then on the Wednesday, he went to Rye and shot a gross 72 - which whilst being 4 over par, is in reality not far off a level par standard.

In the last 7 days, his handicap has dropped from 3.8 to 1.9. Well played Ryan!

Free Guests

From Monday next week until the following Sunday, we appreciate the course is in no state to bring guests. However, we also understand that some of you may still wish to do so. During this period, there is no charge for a member's guest, but do please warn them in advance that the course won't be at its best. We'll have 9 holes open Monday to Thursday, and then 18 holes by the weekend - but with holes and sand.

Course News

The course news this week is just to remind you of the maintenance work we will be carrying out next week. Unfortunately you can't make an omelette without breaking eggs - and it's the same with fine turf grass - to keep the greens, tees and approaches in such good condition does require some disruptive aeration from time to time.

On Monday and Tuesday, we are closing the inner 9 - you will be able to play 9 holes starting at the 12th, and then playing 4th - 11th. Presuming things go well, we will then swap over and close those holes, and open the inner 9 from Wednesday. Phil will keep you updated on Tuesday as to how this is going. We may need one more day before swapping over.

We are carrying out a solid tine on the greens (less disruptive) and a hollow tine on the tees and approaches. We will then brush in some top dressing.

Sorry for the inconvenience, it will all be worth it in the end.
