New Vice-Captains

As you will be aware, the current Vice-Captains are Tsol Keoshgerian and Annie Dixon. They will be voted into office as Captains at the EGM in October this year. I am delighted to let you know that joining them as our Junior Captain will be Evie Lewis (who coincidentally managed to score 47 points in a junior stableford this week!). Congratulations Evie.

I am delighted to announce that following recent meetings of both the Men's and Ladies' Past Captains, Simon Lapthorn and Patricia O'Shea have been selected to be the Vice Captains to Tsol and Annie for 2026, and then Captains for the following year. Congratulations to them both, I am sure they will continue to make an excellent contribution to the Club.

Champions!

We have already reported on this - but here is a picture of the winners from last weekend. On the left is Matt Parker with the Gaunt Plate for best nett score, on the right is Peter Barrett, the winner of the Bulteel Bowl for the best gross score by a senior golfer, and in the middle is your Club Champion for 2025 - Luke Crampton.

Also congratulations to Mark Stevenson who won the Seniors Finch Noyes Bowl on Monday with a remarkable 42 points, and to Bill Shelford for taking home the Vyvyan Shield following 40 points from the blues.

Ladies' Championship

It was a great day of golf, with 36 holes played in the July heat.

Aileen, former winner of the English Senior Women’s Championship and of the English Senior Amateur Championship, once again proved her class, holding off a strong challenge from rising star Sophie to win the Duncan Cup and be crowned Club Champion. A morning 77 gave her a narrow lead over Sophie’s 78, and despite Sophie matching that score in the afternoon, Aileen’s 76 sealed the win.

Sophie’s efforts were rewarded with the Nett Prize, a well-deserved result for a player showing great promise: at 13, she's already off 7.3.

Clare Strong also impressed, finishing third in the Gross and second in the Nett – a fine effort in tough conditions.

Hearty congratulations to all the ladies – a gruelling test of golf, played in great spirit.

Family Twilight Event

A big thank you to everyone who came along to Sussex County's Family Twilight Event last night. Despite the blustery winds trying their best to blow everyone off course, everyone had a lot of fun. It was heartening to see so many families out enjoying the game together!

Final Results:

Cockburn Family (26)
McDermott Family (30)
Hart Family (31)
Kinniburgh Family (32)
Blackford Family (34)
Harding Family (35)
Teubler Family (38)

Piltdown in the semi-final!

Big congratulations to our Martlets team, which is through to the semi-final of the Martlets division after beating Royal Eastbourne at Ham Manor.

The semi-final against Royal Ashdown Forest will take place at Chichester on 31 July. Supporters most welcome!

Mixed Open Helpers

I am hoping for a few helpers on Mixed Open Day - Saturday 26th July. We provide drinks and snacks from the 9th green and the 18th green, and a couple of helpers for each station would be great. Timings will be approximately 10.15 - 12.15

If you can help, and want to spend a couple of hours chatting to our guests, please let me know

Weather warning tomorrow

There is a potential weather warning in the morning and we have a very busy day, with the Brenda Allvey Trophy followed by the Summer fête. Make sure you keep yourselves safe, keep an eye on what's happening overhead and if you hear the klaxon, get off the course as safely as you can.

If anything changes for any of our events, we will try and keep you posted.

Course Update

We’re still experiencing slow growth in the areas of the course without irrigation, so we are focusing our mowing efforts on the greens, tees, and approaches, where we have full irrigation in place. With rain forecast for next week, we’re hopeful that the unirrigated areas will begin to improve. In the meantime, we’ll be applying a wetting agent to the fairways to help ensure moisture reaches the root zone as effectively as possible.

On Tuesday, we tined the greens using small needle tines. This helps oxygen reach the roots with minimal disruption to the putting surface. Encouragingly, root depth is looking strong, suggesting our consistent aeration efforts are yielding good results.

This week, we’ve begun using the soil left over from the recent scrape on the 18th to start filling in the G.U.R. area on the 9th carry. We aim to have this area fully filled and seeded by next week, so we can bring it back into play as soon as possible.

We also carried out our fortnightly feeding programme, this time with a slightly higher iron content to support plant health and provide the greens with that desirable, rich colour.

We are investigating a possible water leak at the water fountain by the 4th tee, so it'll be turned off for the weekend. Apologies for the inconvenience.

Finally, for those heading to the Summer fête this weekend – enjoy yourselves, and let’s hope the weather stays kind.

Many thanks,
Chris
Deputy course manager
