What a Glorious Week

I hope you have all managed to make the most of this amazing spell of weather, which unfortunately looks to be cooling down just in time for the Bank Holiday.

Last weekend we hosted the Sussex Ladies Scratch Foursomes, with pairs entered from many Sussex Clubs. They had a beautiful 3 days of weather, and all were unanimous in their praise of current course conditions, which they felt were excellent for April following such a strange winter. The ladies from the majority of the other Clubs felt that Piltdown had come out of the winter better than they had, which was nice to hear.

Some great golf was played, especially in the morning semi-finals on Sunday, when both games went up the 19th. Well done to Céline and George who managed the tee sheet on the day to get them back out again for the final at a later time than planned. In the end, Worthing came out on top after beating Royal Ashdown in the final.

Men's roll up

The first Men’s Roll Up of 2025 took place on Sunday. It was blessed with beautiful weather and a great turnout. It was wonderful to welcome a mix of longstanding and newer members, capturing the true spirit and ethos of Piltdown as the special club we know and love. Pictures from the day show members enjoying a coffee together before heading out and relaxing with some well-earned refreshments in the sunshine afterwards.

Thank you to everyone who came along — we look forward to your continued support at future events! The next one is scheduled for Sunday 18th May and many are already signed up.

It would be great to see as many as possible, so anyone wishing to participate, please contact Derek Elphick

Super Sophie

Sophie has started her season with a stunning 4 over par at Hill Barn to take both the nett and gross prizes in the Sussex County Girls' Spring Meeting.

She's now down to 10.9 and we can't wait to see all she will achieve this year.

More winning!

Congratulations to our Handicap team for a splendid victory at home against Eastbourne Downs on Saturday.

Best of luck for the rest of the tournament - Round 2 sees them with an away draw at Seddlescombe.

Munro the merciless

This is the putt that won the day for our Cyril Blake team in the play off hole after the match finished 2.5-2.5 away at Sweetwoods.

This was quite ironic, as our team had voiced concern that the course, particularly the greens at Sweetwoods were not really in a fit state to host a match.

Great putt David, and congratulations to all the team! Next match is Selsey at Piltdown on 19th May.

Here are the lucky winners:

1st Andrew Majcher - Bag

2nd Andrew Smith - 4 headcovers

3rd Toby Cannon - 2 headcovers

4th Guy Baxter - ProV1s Masters logo

5th Anthony Beard - Masters hat

Course update

The warm weather has certainly helped out on the course, and we are finally starting to see some much-needed growth to the fairways.

However, as always happens at this time of year, it also brings out the growth of the weeds as well. If you have played midweek you will have seen Bron or Charlotte out on the small digger pulling up the silver birches one by one. They have been doing this most days for weeks. This is by far the best long term solution to keep the heather clean, but it is very slow progress.

We are aware that in the past couple of weeks the birch have sprung up quite dramatically in a few places around the course, and this looks quite untidy. We will make a decision about which areas to get the Grillo machine on to take the top off and tidy up (which looks better short term but can actually make the long term problem worse) and which areas to leave for now to be pulled by the "digger girls" when they can.

A number of you have commented positively on the new 150 markers, we now have Ben Todd in the middle of a white tee post renovation for us. He has done the first few (see pic) and I am really pleased with the result. The rest will be done and put back out in the coming weeks. PLEASE can I ask that you don't either try and sit on them or lean your clubs on them. Thank you
