And So it Begins......

The season has officially started - what a first day at Augusta. Mixed fortunes for the players, but what a great start by Justin Rose. This is the 5th time he has led after the first round. Quite incredible.

Lots of you entered the Masters Sweep - can you please check your entries by clicking the link below. My eyes tend to go cross eyed by the time I have put them all into the spreadsheet, so mistakes are possible!

Tomorrow sees our Slim Pin event organised by Captain Cox. Those of you playing please bring a fiver in cash for what could be an invaluable mulligan! The pins are being put out today in readiness, we hope you like them.

EASTER

Don't forget - our famous Lewis/Taylor Trophies are all set to go next weekend. I know I've been praying for rain recently, but let's hope it doesn't to spoil what can be Piltdown at it's best. (However - I have been told off by Matt - apparently it's not rain that is inhibiting the grass growth (although we do still need rain), it is the lack of soil temperature. The night time frosts are restricting growth and recovery)

Remember - to qualify for the overall prizes you need to have played in at least 3 of the events. They are:

Thursday 17th April - Ladies Stableford - Enter online.

Friday 18th April - Roll-Up Mixed Foursomes. Be in the clubhouse by 8.45 for a partner draw and multi tee start at 9.00am.

Saturday 19th April - Fourball Betterball - Any combination. Enter online with your chosen partner.

Sunday 20th April - Singles Stableford. 2 separate events for men and ladies. Play at anytime during the day - just pre-register your round before you go out.

Monday 21st April - Greensomes Pick-Up. Be in the clubhouse by 8.45 for a partner draw and multi-tee start at 9.00am.

If you are new to the Club, or haven't played any of these events before, don't miss out.

SLIM PIN FUNDRAISER

Tomorrow sees our Slim Pin event organised by Captain Cox. Those of you playing please bring a fiver in cash for what could be an invaluable mulligan! The pins are being put out today in readiness, we hope you like them. (Pic is on 18 today)

WATER FOUNTAINS

Our friendly plumber has managed to get the taps working, but not the fountains. So please take bottles out with you to fill up. The pipework inside the brickwork has split or burst, so there is no quick fix to the fountains.

First "Major" Winners of the Season?

Before the winner of the Masters is crowned on Sunday, Piltdown already has it's first few "Major" winners for 2025. So far:

The March Cup was won by Mike McGann with 42 points

The Piltdown Trophy was won by Stuart Allen & Peter Keith Lucas with 36 points

The Burton Salver was won by Charlie Dawson with 38 points

The Robertson Cup was won by Wendy Masters with a nett 73

The Men's Weekend Order of Merit is tight at the top - Mike McGann re-took the lead following a good finish in the Burton Salver last week, to go with his win in the March Cup.

Dave Cannon at the Masters?

Piltdown member Dave Cannon is being recognised by Augusta National this week as he becomes the first photographer to capture 40 years at the Masters. Basically - any memorable picture from the world of golf since the early 80s was taken by Dave. Quite an incredible career.

There is an excellent recent interview with him in Today's Golfer.

Happy Birthday Barrie

Congratulations to Piltdown's very own Barrie Page who turned 93 last week. The event was marked by a celebratory lunch here at the Club, where it was great to see Richard Kyle and his wife Anne come back to help celebrate the occasion. Barrie is not the only person in this photo aged 90 or above - it just shows how good golf is for your longevity!

Perhaps I'd better dust of my clubs.......
