From The Course

As we emerge from a long, wet winter, we wanted to update you on a few developments on the course. We had an extensive list of winter tasks to complete, many of which we have successfully finished. However, some are slightly behind schedule due to the early arrival of rain in late summer and early autumn of 2024.

Tree Clearance

We are very pleased with the tree clearance between the 17th fairway and 18th tee. This has significantly opened up the views, bringing us even closer to how the course would have looked when originally laid out on the open heath. The final step in this project is the removal of the remaining tree stumps.

Heather Clearance

One of last year’s biggest successes was the purchase of a mini digger to help remove birch saplings from the heather. This work will continue as conditions allow, and we will strive to keep the heather as weed-free as possible. It is a huge task, but one we remain committed to.

Drainage Work on the 4th

We began work on the lay-up area of the 4th back in September, as this has always been a particularly wet spot. Unfortunately, heavy rain at the end of September and into October forced us to leave it unfinished. It has only just dried out enough to allow machinery back in, so we plan to return in the coming weeks to complete the drainage work, followed by seeding and restoration.

Other Drainage and Course Works

We have cleared several ditches, though we recognise that more work remains. We will continue this through the drier months in preparation for next winter. We are very pleased with the recent course works and are confident that the playing surfaces will benefit from the sand we have been able to apply. Sod’s Law dictated that we have had no rain since completing the work—which would have helped wash the sand in more quickly and improve playability—but it looks like some is on the horizon, which will be useful.

Bank by the 13th Green

The work on the bank to the left of the 13th has been a great success. Our aim was to make the area fairer for golfers while also ensuring it is easier to maintain and keep tidy. We still need to install two sets of steps before it can come into play. Once completed, we kindly ask that all players use the steps to give the heather its best chance of remaining strong and healthy. We also plan to plant additional heather to the left and long of the bank.

When the sleepers arrive to build these steps, we will also build the new steps on the 12th ladies tee.

Fairway Mats

Several clubs have been trialling the use of small fairway mats during the winter months. The concept is that each player carries a small mat and places their ball on it when playing from the fairway. Initially, we were sceptical, but reports from other clubs suggest that members have found them beneficial and that they help protect the course. We will give this further consideration, but if you would like to see what we are referring to, please visit the Spurk Golf website. If any members have experience using these mats at other clubs and would like to share feedback—positive or negative—we would greatly appreciate it.

Looking Ahead to the Season

We will be putting out the new Slim Pins, flags, and hole cups in preparation for the Slim Pin fundraiser on 12th April. A big thank you to Robin Cox for his efforts in raising funds for this.

New 150 yard posts will also be installed around the same time, along with extra red hazard posts to ensure clear identification of hazards across the course.

Our white tee posts are looking a little tired, and we are currently exploring the option of having them refurbished and slightly shortened by one of our members. If that is not feasible, we will look to replace them this year—one way or another, this will be resolved.

Three new benches have been ordered: one for the 8th tee, one for the 10th, and one for the 14th tee. Now that the ground is dry, we can also bring in a contractor to finish off the flooring for the halfway shelter, which was constructed last year.

We have also been exploring ways to improve the bell system on the 8th, as it never seems to last very long—recently proven when a member tied his dog to the post, only for the dog to pull on his lead and break it! We will be installing a new post and bell in the very near future.

There is plenty to look forward to as we head into the season. We approach it with some optimism and confidence that we will provide you with a great golfing experience this year. Your patience and understanding as we carry out ongoing improvements are greatly appreciated, and we will continue striving to enhance the course at every opportunity.

Phil, Matt and John
